Floating Weed Control

Free-floating surface plants derive their nutrient needs directly from the water. They are not attached to the bottom. Common types are Duckweed, Watermeal (Wolffia), Star Duckweed and Water Hyacinth. These plants reproduce throughout the growing season. Whole pond treatment is recommended for thorough and longer-term control. Free-floating plants can quickly cover an entire pond.

Rooted floating plants include waterlily, spatterdock, and water lotus. Spatterdock is usually the weedier of the three and completely fill in shallow areas less than 3' or 4' deep. Spatterdock is a massive, difficult to kill underground rhizome from which new plants sprout. It differs from waterlily in having heart-shaped leaves that come above the surface of the water and a yellow flower. Waterlily has round leaves. In our opinion, the most natural and effective way of controlling floating aquatic weeds is the combination of our pond bacteria and an aeration system.
